From Manchester/M6 (J19) Take the A556 towards Chester until it meets the A49. Turn right onto the A49 (Warrington) and continue over the swing bridge and at the next traffic lights at the BP garage and A533, turn right and proceed as above.
For GPS users: the postcode is CW8 4RL and the location is at the junction of Shutley Lane, Ash House Lane and Cogshall Lane, Northwich.
TIMES
Please telephone Phill for times on Friday 18th May between 6 and 9 p.m. on the above number. If you are travelling with a friend, let me know in advance and I will endeavour to give you times close together.
GENERAL
The aim of the day is to encourage beginners and novice riders so that you may progress on to bigger and better things (and enjoy yourself on the day). If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to give us a ring.
When you first arrive, collect your number at the entries tent (£5 deposit required). Bring your hat and body protector with you when you check in (See SAFETY). Once mounted locate the steward to have your tack checked. This is important and not just for safety reasons –in previous years competitors have been eliminated for having the wrong tack!
Below are a few guidance notes to assist your preparation in the three phases.
The day will start with a dressage test…………
DRESSAGE
The test will be “BE90 Dressage Test 95 (2012)”. For those of you who know a BE member, the test is included in the handbook.
You can also download a copy from the British Eventing website (Homepage -> About Us -> Downloads -> Dressage Tests)
Immediately prior to your allocated time and when the previous test has finished, you may warm up around the perimeter of the dressage arena. When the judge sounds the car horn, you should enter the arena and begin your test [enter at A and proceed down the centre line etc.]. For beginners only, the test may be ‘commanded’, i.e. you can have someone at the side of the arena shouting out the movements.
Dress should be show jacket, beige or white jodhpurs. Light coloured gloves should be worn. Competitors may wear jodhpur boots with matching half chaps or gaiters. Juniors may not wear spurs for the dressage or any other phase.
Please note that the test must be ridden in a snaffle bridle and whips are not allowed.
On to the showjumping phase……
SHOWJUMPING
You are expected to perform one round of showjumping. This is not against the clock although there will be a maximum time permitted, after which penalties will be incurred.
Dress should be as for dressage. However, you will not be penalised for wearing a body protector over your show jacket.
Any bit permitted and whips are allowed but again, not spurs for juniors.
The final phase, cross country……
CROSS COUNTRY
The course will be fairly straightforward.
An optimum time (set on the day) will be in place on the cross country – too quick or too slow and you will incur penalty points.
Body protectors must be worn, preferably with shoulder pads.
Dress should be beige or white jodhpurs with sweat top/jersey, and still no spurs for junior competitors.
Carrying of stop watches is forbidden.
Excessive outside assistance may result in the competitor being disqualified.
SAFETY
Riding hats to the standards PAS015, ASTMF1163 or BSEN 1384 with Kitemark, SEI or QAS are compulsory and must be properly fastened at all times the rider is mounted. BSI 4472 (1988) and BSI 6473 are no longer recognised standards.
Bring your hat with you when you check in – no hat, no number!
SCORING
DRESSAGE

3rd refusal elimination
Fall of rider 8 penalties

PLEASE BE PATIENT WITH THE SCORING JUDGES – IT TAKES A LOT OF TIME TO COLLECT ALL THE CROSS COUNTRY MARKS TO ARRIVE AT THE OVERALL SCORE
Rosettes will be awarded to 6th place, plus highest placed member awards to ARC members registered before the day of the event.
(In the case of tied scores, the competitor with the best cross-country score will be given the higher placing.)
We hope you have a good day, and most of all, enjoy yourself.
See you there.
